Hungarian Goulash Festival & Book Fair

The Hungarian Community Centre's annual Goulash Festival was held on 4 February 2018.

This year's spectacular event was made possible by the dancers, parents, and teachers of the Gyöngyösbokréta Melbourne adult and children's folk dance groups and the support and sponsorship of the Wantirna Community Bank®branch of Bendigo Bank.

Each year dozens of cooking enthusiasts enter the competition to see who cooks the best goulash and fish soup. The competition has been a long-standing tradition of the Hungarian Community Centre, with hundreds coming to savour the delicious soups and vote for their favourite; and this year was no different!

On the competition day, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping and the patrons were flocking to the Hungarian Community Centre's gardens to taste the goulash and fish soups that had been brewing since the early hours of the morning. Three judges were also at the ready to taste and score the offerings.

For what has been the biggest turn out yet with more than 1000 visitors to the festival, the day could not have been better! From Hungarian foods, including sweets, crepes and traditional fried bread (lángos) to fun activities for the kids with face-painting, a jumping castle and arts and crafts, as well as a bountiful book fair and live music, there was something to satisfy all the senses!

It was so exciting to see new faces and a range of cultures come together to witness the newly crowned Goulash and Fish Soup champions for 2018. After hours slaving over hot cauldrons, adding in secret ingredients and spices, the votes were counted and the verdict was in!

Erdő Kata was awarded the winner of the best goulash soup for 2018 based on having the soup with the best aroma, texture, taste, and colour, while Tibi Tcara announced as the winner of the best Fish Soup! The two winners were crowned and handed their winning spoils along with a huge applause from all attendees. Audience's favourite soup was also awarded to Laci Forgács and Vesna.

Gyöngyösbokréta was honoured to have a VIP representative, Wantirna Community Bank® branch Manager Mr. Simon Vu, present the 1st place prize of a $150 cash donation from their branch along with a shiny crown, to the winner of the best Goulash soup.

Please enjoy some photos from the day's festivities in our gallery and we look forward to seeing you at the next Gyöngyösbokréta event!
